Here is a free sample letter that you can use to demand back the excess rent in Germany.

13 of 16 federal states in Germany have rent control. This means the rent can be a maximum of 10% above the local comparative rent (ortsüblichen Vergleichsmiete).

If your landlord charges rent above this limit, you can retroactively get the excess rent back. To demand the excess back and reduce the rent, you must write a letter to your landlord.

The letter must be in German and sent via a registered post. As a foreigner in Germany, writing a letter in German might be tricky. So, we wrote it for you. You can download the sample letter for free.
